With help from R&B and hip-hop's A-list, pianist and producer Robert Glasper remixes, revamps, and extends Miles Davis’ legacy. He brings the trumpeter’s innovative spirit into the 21st century, recontextualizing tracks like <i>In a Silent Way</i>’s “The Ghetto Walk” into a boom bap-guided nighttime scene for Bilal to breathily narrate. “Right on Brotha,” a downtempo cut on which Stevie Wonder lends his inimitable harmonica, nods to Davis’ sparkly later years. Other tunes render the source material almost unrecognizable: Glasper flips 1974’s soul-inspired fusion piece “Maiysha” into an ’80s-style Latin beat with Erykah Badu crooning bossa nova-style on top.
