And while there’s the usual undertow of fuzzed-up riffs (drink in the nimble-fingered splendour of “Tiny”) there are deft, delicate surprises too. J. Mascis cedes lead vocal duty to Lou Barlow on pleasingly mellow ‘70s noodler “Love Is…” and “Knocked Around” is that rare rock beast—a reflective slice of dim-the-lights crooning that still has the power to melt your face off.
