About

Carole King’s evolution from Brill Building tunesmith to singer/songwriter is captured on Writer, the album she released prior to her breakthrough work Tapestry. Writer can be appreciated as an honest, often fascinating portrait of an artist moving beyond commercial constraints into something more personal. King reconsiders such familiar collaborations with ex-husband Gerry Goffin as “Goin’ Back,” “No Easy Way Down” and “Up On the Roof” with a new poignancy and grace. A number of tunes — particularly the tender “Child of Mine” and the warmly playful “What Have You Got to Lose” — anticipate the intimacy of Tapestry. Such neglected Goffin/King gems as “Eventually”(a mature reflection upon the ‘60s) and “Spaceship Races” (a surprisingly rocking love song) compare favorably to the better-known material. King’s crisp, emotive piano playing is bolstered by Danny Kortchmar’s versatile guitar work throughout the album. Writer is one of the most varied and revelatory releases in King's storied catalog.
