Evans’ soft-touch lyricism propels this gorgeous set from the pianist’s legendary 1961 stand at the Village Vanguard, and drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro's deliciously restrained backing only highlights his expressive talents. In "Some Other Time," the bass glows softly and the drums rarely rise above a whisper while Evans carefully draws out his harmonic ideas. The sentimental title track, an Evans original, is a marvel of contrapuntal motion; just as interesting is the way they put Miles Davis' "Milestones" through their unique, subdued filter.
