About

It’s hard to imagine reggae’s first international star as anything but confident, but Struggling Man finds Jimmy Cliff dealing with his longtime producer Leslie Kong’s death. Disillusionment underlies the fraught sentiment and chicken-scratch soul of “I Can’t Live Without You,” while the jerky stop-start of the title track depicts a man grappling with inertia and depression. But with the perky interplay of drums, piano, and hand percussion on “Sooner or Later,” Cliff rises above the misery to deliver an empowering message.
