Here, her melodies eschew jubilance for sweeping, theatrical minor keys (“Sellers of Flowers”); she builds turbulent, Fiona Apple-caliber drama with mournful phrases that crest over plangent bass notes (“The Trapper and the Furrier”). The effect is guileless and profoundly gorgeous.
