This sophomore release from Australia’s Architecture in Helsinki is an inspiring mélange of indie pop and oddball oompah-pah-pah theatrics. In addition to guitars, keyboards, and drums, the musicians contributing to <i>In Case We Die</i> offer up marimbas, Theremin, melodica, tuba, trombones, clarinets and much more (including power tools and sitar!), all skronking, clanging, tick-tocking, chiming and shrieking their parts proudly. There’s a surprising order and subtlety to the chaos, and the eight key members of AIH show a real talent for intelligent songwriting and arranging, with crafty numbers like the ever-morphing “Neverevereverdid” and the operatic “In Case We Die (Parts 1-4)” sounding like musicians clearly striving for more than headlining status at this year’s local IndieFest. “It’ 5!,” “Do The Whirlwind,” and “What’s in Store” are joyful, happy feet moments, and the Martin Denny-style jungle sounds and bird calls on “Need to Shout” will have you admiring their ambition. The dreamy “Rendezvous” and the sweeping “Maybe You Can Owe Me” could easily be soundtrack moments to an art film. The album is expansive and playful, without the showboating that only hurts some artists when left to their own devices
