Twisting traditional folk singing to exhilarating ends, U.K. trio the Wharves intensify their unique craft on their second album and conjure an atmosphere that’s as rousing as it is unsettling. While their vocal melodies build to rapturous heights (“Well Well Well”), evoking 60s girl groups as much as Welsh male voice choirs, their spindly guitar (“The Strike”) summons the spirit of 70s prog-rockers and piercing post-punk. This beautifully strange brew has a stateliness all of its own.
