With her third solo album, Chicago native Chaka Khan developed a sophisticated soul sound that simultaneously showcased her endlessly amiable vocals and her daring ability to venture successfully across a multitude of genres. The title track deals in hip-shaking muscular funk; “We Got Each Other,” with its storming bass and sprightly synths, exploits a distinctly ‘80s pop groove; and “And the Melody Still Lingers On (Night In Tunisia)” is a jazz-pop celebration, armed with a Dizzy Gillespie solo for good measure.
