<i>I Got a Name</i> was Jim Croce’s third album in two years for ABC Records, the label that launched his great success. (Croce had recorded an album with his wife Ingrid that failed to connect with an audience.) His life would be cut tragically short in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana, effectively making this album his last will and testament. Despite the pressures to keep up the manic pace, Croce continued to write from a point of calm reflection. “I’ll Have to Say I Love You In A Song” and the title track served as the radio hits, but the album has a deep reserve of fine tunes. “Lover’s Cross” remains one of Croce’s most underrated songs, touching and simply arranged like much of his best material. “Five Short Minutes” brings his backing band into play with a bar band ferocity. “Thursday” features that easy lope that made his music so immediately accessible while “Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues” reflects on the life Croce might have had without music in his life.
