About

Released in 1980, Hurry Up This Way Again told the same story as many releases by The Stylistics’ peers, who were all bidding goodbye to an era that they'd ruled but that had inevitably come to an end. Hurry Up This Way Again showed just enough innovation to prove that The Stylistics could still run with current trends, while also reminding the incoming generation of what made harmony soul so special to begin with. Fans of the vintage Philly sound need to hear “Found a Love You Couldn’t Handle,” while deep-funk diggers should go directly to the title song, a dank blend of bass and drums. Also exceptional is “It Started Out,” which features a stirring intro befitting the group’s early tenure with master arranger Thom Bell. One might even argue that “Driving Me Wild” is about as good as the tunes Michael Jackson was making in 1980, which meant The Stylistics still had a maximum of style. But they didn’t need to compete with Michael to prove themselves. They just had to deliver a song like “And I’ll See You No More,” an introspective ballad that echoes the brooding musical motif of a hit from their early career, the immortal “People Make the World Go Round.”
