About
Nine albums in, Converge continue to astound with their ability to harness hardcore, metal, and raw emotion into a devastating sonic whirlwind. While roiling tracks like “Wildlife” and “Cannibals” recall some of the band’s anarchic past work, opener “A Single Tear” might be the catchiest and most rock-oriented song they’ve recorded in a decade. From there, the album veers from caustic grind (“Under Duress”) and moody reflection (the title track) to thundering bass grooves (“Trigger”) and gorgeous, apocalyptic gloom (“Thousands of Miles Between Us”).
