Forward-thinking London producers NK-OK and Mr DM, as the duo Blue Lab Beats, assemble a roster heavy with talent on their debut LP. The music is steeped in the vibe of modern soul and hip-hop, with an alluring blend of analog and electronic sound. But the harmonic depth and sensibility of jazz provides a guiding spirit. Moses Boyd’s drumming alongside the band Nérija on “Pineapple” grabs the attention, as does the loping rap of OthaSoul on “Dome” and the yearning vocal of James Vickery on “My Dream.”
