About
“I’m tired of the bright ideas about leavin’ me.” Who else but a great country songwriter — or Al Green — could offer that spin on a devoted love song? Green does it on the title track of Livin’ for You, his second LP of 1973 and one that moves toward the eccentricities of the masterful Belle Album of four years later. This is where to go if you’ve wondered what Al Green would make of “Unchained Melody” (a lot), or if the fabulous “Let’s Get Married” caught your ear on Greatest Hits. But the record also offers some left turns that few would even conceive of, much less try. “Beware” is a long, airy, quietly cautionary track led by Green’s acoustic guitar and inviting bass work by Leroy Hodges, while “My God Is Real” takes the old hymn out for a walk in the style of Green’s classic singles of the era.
