Named after two lead singers of the German Krautrock group Can — Malcolm Mooney and Damo Suzuki — and playing a fever pitch version of NYC garage rock circa 2000, the Mooney Suzuki bring both a spirited tension and an historical sense to their music. <i>Electric Sweat</i> is the band’s second album and was originally released by Gammon Records before being reissued by Columbia Records who signed the group and subsequently dropped them. The album is a powerful blend of angst-ridden vocals and blaring guitars, reminiscent of the ratty vibe underlying Van Morrison’s work with Them and the early Rolling Stones. “In A Young Man’s Mind” found its way into a Coors commercial and it and tracks such as “Oh Sweet Susanna” and “ A Little Bit of Love” deliver a primordial wallop that’s unusual for a band that is clearly aping a bygone era. There’s a simple magic to singer Sammy James Jr.’s vocals that make even his campiest moments seem if not sincere at least something more than hipster ironic, as the slow churning ballad “The Broken Heart” attests.
