About
A three-man crew out of Newark, Lords of the Underground are best remembered for a pair of hit singles from the early ‘90s; timeless club classics "Chief Rocka" and "Funky Child." They had the playfully rambunctious but non-gangsta rhyme style akin to Leaders of the New School and Fu-Schnickens, they had fantastic production from Marley Marl and his protege K-Def, and they had a great DJ in Lord Jazz. Here Come the Lords is an exercise in feel-good, fast-paced, golden-era hip-hop, with plenty of lightening-quick flows and on-point verbal interplay between DoItAll and Mr. Funke. The beats on display here are relentlessly funky, all about the finely chopped samples, glutenous bass drops, wild horn squeals, and neck-bending drums for days. L.O.T.U.G. would release a few more albums over the 15 years that followed, but this is the one you want. Aside from the aforementioned singles, don't miss "Lord Jazz Hit Me One Time (Make It Funky)," "Psycho," and "Check It (Remix)" with Pete Rock.
