About
Florida death-metal legends Deicide have built an entire career out of being mad at God: Their volatile vocalist, Glen Benton (who once famously burned an inverted cross into his forehead), has been railing against organized religion since he joined their ranks in 1987. Their 12th album, Overtures of Blasphemy, features Benton and founding drummer Steve Asheim alongside newer members Kevin Quirion and Mark English. That fresh blood has certainly had an effect: This is one of Deicide’s most dynamic albums to date. From the rippling guitar harmonies on opener “One With Satan” to the unexpected melodies on “Excommunicated,” Overtures of Blasphemy is a formidable—and accessible—beast.
