About
A funk/soul/disco group from New Orleans, Chocolate Milk worked extensively with famed producer Allen Toussaint and debuted in 1975 with Action Speaks Louder Than Words. They'd eventually release eight albums before disbanding in 1983, and they're best known for singles such as "Girl Callin," "Blue Jean," and "I'm Your Radio." Milky Way was originally released in 1979 and finds them smoothly transitioning from straight R&B funk into a more disco-fied style. Tight horn arrangements, intergalactic keyboard meanderings, nod-inducing basslines, and extra-smooth harmonies dominate, creating an instantly likeable sound similar to contemporaries Earth Wind & Fire, Kool and the Gang, and Con Funk Shun. There's not a weak moment here, but "Groove City," the title track, and "You're the One" are especially solid. Though they may not have the name recognition of some of their peers, this is fantastic music that remains impressive decades later.
