About
Where Judee Sill's self-titled debut presented her as a Laurel Canyon hippie with a spiritual fixation, 1973's Heart Food is a more elaborate affair. The final album released during the troubled singer/songwriter's brief lifetime is layered with complex vocal and orchestral arrangements underpinning her idiosyncratic, mystical lyrics. Songs range from the gentle acoustic lope of "The Pearl" to the climactic eight-minute epic "The Donor," which fuses The Beach Boys' Smile with a Latin chorale reminiscent of Bach.
