After 15 years of steady accumulating success, Three 6 Mafia broke into the mainstream in 2005 on the strength of their biggest hit to date, “Stay Fly.” Bolstered by a sample of Willie Hutch’s 1975 song “Why Has Our Love Gone Cold,” “Stay Fly” is a rap anthem of the highest order, the kind of song that can lift the listener off his feet when played at the proper volume. As catchy as “Stay Fly” is, Three 6 Mafia’s bid for success didn’t require them to sell-out their old sound. “Swervin',” “Knock the Black Off Yo A*s,” “Hard Hittaz,” and “Half On A Sack” are as mean and heavy as anything in the group’s 15-year career, while “P***y Got Ya Hooked,” and the snappy, horn-driven gem “Poppin’ My Collar” lift Paul and Juicy’s production to new heights.
