Recorded live in California during 1993’s Into the Labyrinth tour, <i>Toward the Within</i> shows why Dead Can Dance concerts have been cult favorites. Using hammered dulcimers, synths, guitars, and tons of percussion, the band step nimbly through an ancient Persian love song and the Middle Eastern epic "Oman," as well as traditional Irish ballads and '70s-style folk. Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard's rapturous, often melancholy, vocals add gothic drama and a mysterious, magnificent cohesion to this disparate collection of otherworldly elements.
