About
Apart from a loving Ramones cover in “You Should Never Have Opened That Door,” Ty Segall’s 2008 debut album is the sound of the scrappy California garage rocker finding his own voice. Free-ranging and overdriven, it’s stoked with urgency while pounding out the catchiest of lo-fi hooks and brashest of vocal enthusiasm. Jagged gems like “Pretty Baby (You’re So Ugly)” and “The Drag” could have been recorded in a sodden basement several decades ago, maniacally paying tribute to the British Invasion’s raw, unruly underbelly.
