Originally released on three CDs in October 1994, the selection of tracks is impeccable, a series of cuts and remixes that have calcified as club classics over the years. And it’s technically dazzling: a this-is-how-it’s-done blueprint for mixes that features the UK DJ duo in artful and butter-smooth form as they slip each track into the next, replicating the emotional tides and currents of their residency at Renaissance in Derby. More than that though, <i>Renaissance: The Mix Collection</i> is a vital artefact in the history of UK club culture—a three-hours-plus document of dance music diversifying and innovating during the early ’90s as it sprouted from the underground to take its latest grip on the mainstream. The mix comes in three parts, and on this first installment, Sasha and Digweed lean into the progressive house movement. Here, artists such as Leftfield, Sunscreem, and Bedrock—Digweed’s own partnership with Nick Muir—restate the possibilities for house music by exploring new textures and atmospheres while pulling from multiple styles and genres.
