About
Soul music would’ve sounded completely different had this Stax Records house band not existed. Their loose-limbed, gut-burning R&B defined Memphis soul. (They backed Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and many others.) This comp collects the best from their own instrumental albums released between 1962 and 1971. It’s filled with heady groove monsters (“Hip Hug Her,” “Soul Clap ’69”), soulful reinventions (The Beatles’ “Something,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”), omnipresent chart-toppers (can’t escape “Green Onions”), and all the evidence to prove that as players they were absolutely untouchable.
