About
Moving away from the heavy themes of 2015’s Dark Bird Is Home—during which he lost a close relative and went through a divorce—the Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson reflects on his solitude through spare acoustic folk. Matsson tells himself that “things will be fine” over brisk strums on “Hotel Bar,” setting the scene with a somber piano arrangement. Simple depictions of rural life enhance the airy, harmonica-led “Waiting for My Ghost” and “There’s a Girl,” both of which capture the homespun simplicity of his first two albums, Shallow Grave and The Wild Hunt. “I’ve been thinking about the mystery as I’m driving here through it all,” he wonders on the haunting title track, determined to find his way as he roams.
