About
A Stax Records mainstay and author of a book full of soul classics, William Bell remained in the second line of the company's roster. (His biggest hit as a singer came years after the label's collapse with the 1977 "Tryin' to Love Two.") The Soul of a Bell (1967) stands as not only a worthy LP, but as a bedrock reminder of its creator's rich vocals and philosophical songwriting. Two of his most untouchable classics are here: "Everybody Loves a Winner," a meditation on the tides of fame and fortune, and "You Don't Miss Your Water," a sad acknowledgment of romance's pains that was also recorded by artists ranging from Otis Redding to the Byrds. This edition includes alternate takes of "Water" and "Any Other Way."
