About
Release is a 2014 compilation of various Cave jams left off the Chicago group’s first three albums and three EPs. Tracks were rescued from four- and eight-track tapes, and several masters were transferred from VHS tape, Cave’s preferred mix-down format in the late ’00s. They're not ones to duplicate themselves; the tracks convey their ability to lock in and swing, whether it’s the blistering doom-garage of “Boneyard,” the tough and funky “Party Legs,” or the playful motorik of “Thai I Am.” Bobby Conn joins in for the new wave quickness of “Bobby’s Hash.” Vocals pop up on “Jim.” Buzzy synths enlighten “Machines and Muscles.”
