The Denver-based musician coined the term “heaven metal” to describe her own sound: dreamy, drifty ambient pop about total devastation. <i>Forever</i>, Midwife’s second project, is dedicated to the artist’s close friend Colin Ward, who died in 2018—hence the chant that opens “2018,” a numb repetition of “This is really happening.” Drenched in reverb, with forlorn melodies that feel like prayers, the six-track EP is crushing in the best way, especially on closer “S.W.I.M.”; fans of Grouper’s depressive drone will be charmed.
