About
Sleep’s final studio recording Jerusalem (a 63-minute song entitled “Dopesmoker”) veered from their stoner-rock stronghold to journey toward the slower paced, hypnotically monotonous riffs falling closer to the doom metal genre. Following Sleep’s dissolve, bass player/singer Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Haikus formed the duo Om, which used the blueprints of Jerusalem to birth a similar sonance in droning dirges of colossally loud mantras (sans guitar). Haikus left Om in 2008 and was replaced by Emil Amos of the band Battles who debuts here on Good Is Good. A 19-minute long “Thebes” introduces the biblically themed God Is Good with slow swells of distorted bass riffs that cradle Cisneros’ monotonic chants. The following “Meditation Is the Practice of Death” opens with clean bass tones as Cisneros sings of the royal family of Judah, which may be the only time since the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique where a song referenced Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. The hypnotic instrumental “Cremation Ghat II” bookends, making good use of tamboura.
