Vic Chesnutt's third album balances acoustic tunes and his most electrified songs to date. Its rerelease features much improved sound that illuminates the beauty lurking at its heart. "When I Ran Off and Left Her" reflects his trademark sound, with gentle acoustics and Chesnutt's delicious delivery, where each syllable is enunciated with enthusiasm. "Sleeping Man" is the harder edge of the album's spectrum. Its electric guitars slash, and the rhythm actually sways with attitude. A second version of the song features Syd Straw accompanying Vic on vocals. "Supernatural" delicately and gracefully explores the car accident that left Chesnutt a quadriplegic. "Dodge" features a limping rhythm and a sense of things falling apart—which is exactly what happens with the maelstrom of "Gluefoot," "Drunk," and "Naughty Fatalist," where the performances turn lawless. The bonus tracks here greatly expand the album, featuring early versions of "Arthur Murray" and "Cutty Sark" and strong live versions of "Aunt Avis," "Gravity of the Situation," and Bob Dylan's "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine."
