About

Vic Chesnutt's sound gets an overhaul here with help from the 12-piece juggernaut Lambchop. "Duty Free," "Bernadette and Her Crowd," and "Scratch, Scratch, Scratch" evoke the slow, lonely sounds of Chesnutt's early recordings. For "Replenished," Lambchop pumps up the horns and the festive grooves to give Chesnutt some healthy funk. "Until the Led" starts with a quick indie rock tempo before the brass section kicks in for the bridge and chorus. "Arthur Murray" uses Hammond organ to create its late-night soul groove, as Chesnutt whispers and croons his way to the end of the night. Lambchop still demands that Chesnutt keep his tempo up for the sly and fun "P***k." But the festivities wear Chesnutt out, and he's back to his quiet self for the darkness of the final tunes, including the sparse and ghostly "Woodrow Wilson," the softly countrified "Parade," and the beautifully muted "Old Hotel," where the band sounds like it's playing and partying in another room.
