About

Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Toure’s 2011 release, The Secret, follows two previous studio efforts, Vieux Farka Toure and Fondo. At this point in his career Vieux is an artist to be reckoned with in his own right: he’s no longer just the son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure. Vieux continues to draw from the wellspring of tradition as he branches out from his roots, and several guests help broaden the album’s scope. The Secret starts off strongly with “Sokosondou,” which has a web of light percussion, entrancing guitars, and layered vocals. “Aigna” features Derek Trucks’ electric slide guitar; he fits into this setting while also bringing an exciting new element to the mix. (Interestingly, his playing brings to mind Indian music.) Vieux is joined by his late father, Ali, on the title cut, a mellow, hypnotic instrumental; “Lakkal (Watch Out)” is marked by funky trap kit drumming, producer Eric Krasno’s guitar, and Ivan Neville’s organ comping. Guitarist John Scofield brings his distinctive touch to the Spanish/Middle Eastern flavored “Gido.” “Touri,” a slow-tempo burner, brings the album to a close.
