Released in December 1982 just as the band called it a day, <i>Dig the New Breed</i> is a live album featuring performances recorded between 1977 and 1982. It became an immediate must-have for fans of The Jam, who understood that their live performances were often more ferocious than their studio releases. “In the City” kicks things off at London's 100 Club on Sept. 11, 1977, with eyebrow-raising versions of “All Mod Cons,” “To Be Someone (Didn’t We Have a Nice Time)," and “It’s Too Bad” coming from the Rainbow in London on Dec. 13, 1979. The album continues chronologically (except for “Standards,” which flashes back to Feb. 16, 1979, at Reading University). The Dec. 14, 1981, show at London’s Hammersmith Palais brings out remarkable versions of “Start!,” Eddie Floyd’s “Big Bird,” and “Set the House Ablaze,” which never sounded better. The final tracks are from the Glasgow Apollo in Scotland on April 8, 1982—and what a final four songs they are, reminding fans of what was no longer.
