For their sixth album, Tegan and Sara reunite with Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla for a sharper, more electronic-focused record. It came at a fitful time: Sara was getting divorced (as she sings on “Night Watch”) and the twins were recovering from the worst period of their relationship. Their respective writing styles are at their most polarized—Tegan writing taut ragers like “Northshore” and “The Ocean,” and Sara penning flinty anthems like “Arrow” and “Alligator Tears”—but they're still united by their incisive takes on emotional turmoil and the tightly wound nature of their diverse approaches.
