Enya’s trademark sound is a reverberant backwash of many voices from one larynx, a multitracked vocal orchestra undulating across plucked strings and discreet instrumentation. This sonic calling card radically changes everything it touches, adding mystery and magic to traditionally structured ballads (“Stars and Midnight Blue”), turning slower songs into swelling ambient flushes (“Drifting,” “Sumiregusa [Wild Violet]”) and swirling Celtic incantations (“The River Sings”) or simply making chamber pop (“Amarantine,” “My! My! Time Flies!”) sound like Enya, her own personalized genre.
