About

For their 1990 major-label debut, the former teen-punk pranksters refashion themselves as consummate power-pop craftsmen, the sarcastic sneer of old giving way to the dramatic, tambourine-rattled jangle of “Annie’s Gone” and the pensive acoustic balladry of “I Don’t Know How to Be Your Friend.” But the band’s flair for savvy pop-cultural name-dropping and meta humor remains: “Shonen Knife” is a garage-revved shout-out to the namesake Japanese trio, while the band’s Me Decade obsession peaks with the ecstatic, Camaro-ready rocker “1976.”
