After a few years bubbling up from the LA underground, Channel Tres steps out with his fullest statement to date: a five-track EP that confirms his status as one of dance music’s most captivating new characters. Channel Tres’ smoky intonation would be a showstopper just reading from the phone book, so his singsong flow is all the more compelling on a song like “Brilliant N***a,” a declaration of black excellence whose laidback deep-house groove masks his smoldering determination. On “Black Moses,” gravelly 808s and Tres’ purred vocals set up a defiant verse from JPEGMAFIA, whose excitable cadence makes for a thrilling contrast with the track’s ultra-subdued mood. It’s proof that Tres could easily hold his own in the rap game, but with “Sexy Black Timberlake” and “Raw Power,” he dives back into deep house and dub techno. Once again, it’s his unmistakable baritone that rounds out the package—a reminder that for all the pleasures of “faceless” dance music, nothing grabs the attention like an original voice.
