About
Moxy was a Toronto hard rock band born in 1974, featuring bassist Terry Juric and singer Buzz Shearman from the band Leigh Ashford, along with guitarists Greg Godovitz (Fludd & Goddo), Earl Johnson (King Biscuit Boy), and drummer Gil Moore (Triumph). Its eponymous 1976 debut LP—often nicknamed The Black Album—featured guest appearances by guitarist Tommy Bolin, who was recording in the studio next door. The deep resonance of a giant gong introduces the opening song, “Fantasy”: a swirling serenade of glam-rock balladry played at the lumbering pace of a sludgy Black Sabbath song. Shearman’s vocals inflect with a high tenor that would suit him well when the band ventured toward more heavy metal leanings. The following “Sail On Sail Away” rings with acoustic guitars before the rhythm section comes thundering down halfway through, alongside some of the album's heaviest riffs. But it’s Bolin’s guitar work here that really shines. “Can’t You See I’m a Star” is another standout, portraying the life of a '70s rock star.
