The genre-defying Texas-based act’s sophomore LP pushes the limits of what listeners typically expect from folk rock, blending trippy, hallucinatory arrangements with gritty, ’70s-inspired instrumentation, big choruses, and heady lyrics that beg repeated listens. On some tracks, like the lengthy opener “Fly Migrator,” the band ventures into jam territory, taking their time in building immersive soundscapes reminiscent of <i>Evil Urges</i>-era My Morning Jacket. The band also pulls from their country roots—members Andy Stepanian and Mason Brent are also known for their work as part of the Richmond honky-tonk outfit Wrinkle Neck Mules—to infuse the album’s intricate, deftly constructed landscape with just the right amount of rowdy, red-dirt energy.
