Recorded at L.A.'s Wiltern Theatre during the 2003 tour following the release of <i>The Raven</i>, <i>Animal</i> is among Lou Reed's most rewarding live albums. The ensemble is small and focused, often without drums; this creates a sense of chamber music rock 'n' roll. Bassist Fernando Saunders coproduces and adds backup vocals, while Antony Hegarty of Antony & The Johnsons sings lead on "Candy Says" and "Set the Twilight Reeling," providing an almost Nico-like experience. Cellist Jane Scarpantoni brings a sense of warmth to "Tell It to Your Heart" and "Vanishing Act" and returns the drama to the S&M classic "Venus in Furs," here in an epic performance. Reed's stage banter is hilarious and engaging, bringing a sense of mischief to <i>Songs for Drella</i>'s "Smalltown" and insight to "Street Hassle" and the opening "Advice." There isn't a better, more affecting version of "The Day John Kennedy Died," while "Dirty Blvd." is performed in an expansive version. An essential work.
