About

No Goodbyes is a 1977 collection of highlights from Hall & Oates’ years at Atlantic Records. The Philly duo released three albums—Whole Oats, Abandoned Luncheonette, and War Babies—for the label between 1972 and 1974 and eventually had a hit for Atlantic with “She’s Gone” after they’d scored with “Sara Smile” at their new label. This collection includes “She’s Gone,” along with three songs—“Love You Like a Brother,” “It’s Uncanny,” and “I Want to Know You for a Long Time”—that were previously unreleased. Only one song—the excellent “Lilly (Are You Happy)”—is taken from the debut album, with three tracks—“Can’t Stop the Music (He Played It Much Too Long),” “Beanie G. and the Rose Tattoo,” and “‘70s Scenario”—coming from the Todd Rundgren–produced War Babies album, a set best heard on its own where the harder rock sounds of Utopia make more sense. The three songs from Abandoned Luncheonette—“Las Vegas Turnaround (The Stewardess Song),” “She’s Gone," and “When the Morning Comes”—are much closer to the typical blue-eyed soul-pop of Hall & Oates.
