About

Living Colour emerged in the late ‘80s as the hard-rock band most likely to bridge the gap between heavy metal’s brute force and commercial radio’s need to push a gentler, friendlier pop hook. Their 1988 debut, Vivid, was a tour de force, but subsequent albums found the group still plenty skillful but lacking a certain drive and their commercial fortunes waned. 2009’s The Chair In the Doorway may not return the group to their initial heights, but it does contain plenty of recharged passion. Singer Corey Glover channels his inner rage for the slow-grind funk of “Decadance” and the soul-ballad-to-powerchord force of “Hard Times,” even turning pretty for the gorgeous pop of “Taught Me.” Guitarist Vernon Reid, always one of the more experimental lead guitarists ever since his days in Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society, lets loose with plenty of helter-skelter solos, whether they’re buried in the mix or front-and-center showpieces. And no one can challenge the rhythm section of bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Will Calhoun for sheer elasticity.
