About

Johnny Marr has made a life of collaborating with hyperverbal frontmen. His years as the Smiths’ jangle-guitar hero done, Marr and New Order’s Bernard Sumner came together as the nucleus of Electronic. Get the Message combines songs from their three albums and a forgotten soundtrack appearance. Inspired by the late-’80s’ explosion of dance-music culture in England, they married the new sounds with Marr’s style for a twist on the combination New Order had been forging for years. Sumner’s defiant sad-sack persona birthed classic lines such as “I’ve been walking in the rain just to get wet on purpose” (from the band’s debut single, “Getting Away With It,” which also featured Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe) and the sideways Lou Reed tribute “I always thought of you as my brick wall” (“Get the Message”). While not as mighty as Sumner’s world-changing contributions to New Order, the music contains hints of what was to come with their Get Ready. This is must-hear stuff for fans of any of these guys.
