As mystique-filled as is their literature-referencing debut title, Fol Chen crept stealthily into the indie spotlight with their relaxed vibe, genteel boy/girl vocals, and their easy and undulantly flowing electro-pop. “We are cryptic and joyful and we would like you to dance,” is a well-distributed “transmission” from the band, and while the former adjective may fit better than the latter, it’s the verb "dance" in that sentence that really delivers. “No Wedding Cake” is smooth and glossy, with twinkling guitars and restrained funky keyboard riffs keeping things cool, while a drum machine on “The Idiot” virtually whacks the listener into action. “Winter, That’s All” is full of whip-sharp synths, “Cable TV” snakes along over brittle hand claps, and “Red Skies Over Garden City” swells with church bells and strings. Slide and acoustic guitars, shiny horns, booming bass drums and more literary references dot the dark and mysterious landscape inhabited by Fol Chen, but trying to figure it all out merely detracts from the sensuous and evocative mood they’re busy creating. Just relax and enjoy the ride.
