About

Recorded a few months after the band formed in 1981, Sonic Youth’s first recordings capture a fascinating stage in their rapid development. They’d soon shed some of the elements heard here, like the loping, mutant-funk rhythms of “She Is Not Alone” and other traces of their roots in New York’s no-wave scene. But they’d find many further uses for the discordant guitar noise that ups the intensity of “The Burning Spear,” as well as Kim Gordon’s menacing murmur as heard on “I Dreamed I Dream.”
