About
Long before Jenny and Johnny started singing together, each had a separate entertainment career. Former child actor Jenny Lewis was the lead singer of Rilo Kiley, and Johnathan Rice, also an indie rock solo artist, played Roy Orbison in Walk the Line. Their debut album, I’m Having Fun Now, is essentially a seamless mesh of girl/boy voices articulating puzzling and profound lyrics over adorable, slightly surf-rock melodies. Though their wordplay is dark and often graphic, the instrumental tracks are surprisingly sanguine. “Switchblade” is a bewitching ode to a reckless, freewheeling youth, while “Big Wave” opines about a bankrupt California populated with low-libido-having, pill-popping denizens. Jenny cries, “We’re spending what we haven’t made.”
