About
Before they became the hitmaking all-stars of the early ‘80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates were still fishing for their sound. Their 1972 debut found the pair trying on a few different styles, from the glints of pastoral folk that drift across “All Our Love” to the shimmering, vibraphone-dashed soul of “Fall in Philadelphia.” Producer Arif Mardin’s cinematic string arrangements on “Goodnight and Goodmorning” give the otherwise hushed song an emotional heft, hinting at the duo’s soulful sound to come.
