About
Two years after Peter Gabriel’s exit, Genesis’ second live album captures Phil Collins as full-fledged frontman. Recorded in Paris in 1976 and ’77, the double-LP balances accessible singles with flights of fancy like “Firth of Fifth” and the 24-minute “Supper’s Ready.” Jazzy drumming (mostly from Chester Thompson) and prominent synths drive the band, but memorable choruses and that soon-to-be-ubiquitous voice forecast their pop future. Despite the common perception of prog rock, Genesis don’t take themselves too seriously—they sound loose and good-natured across this epic set.
