In the first six songs here—the A-side of the original LP—The Smothers Brothers come off like a folk act that can't finish a song without breaking down into uproarious comedic jousting (and, on "Cabbage," ironic commentary about the performance itself). But in the second half they play it relatively straight, focusing on their no-fooling feel for harmony, backed with lush orchestral arrangements, banjo, and harmonica. "Where the Lilac Grows" sets new lyrics to the melody of "Greensleeves," while "Sailor's Lament" puts Wild West sounds out to sea.
