About
Real-life brothers Jamin (drums) and Jake (voice/guitar) Orrall have made music as JEFF the Brotherhood since 2002, while playing in other bands like Be Your Own Pet, so their finger blisters and ringing ears are well earned. But Heavy Days is the first JTB recording to really gather all the power and steam of their throw-it-in-a-blender-but-keep-it-simple aesthetic, and deliver it with a crispness and clarity that enhances rather than detracts from their sound. The opening titular track is a brilliant introduction to the duo, sure to please fans of vintage hard rock, hypnotic motorik grooves, and post-punk experimentalism. They love mixing it up: on “Dreamscape,” a garage-styled vocal is set to layers of crunching guitars that are more Queens of the Stone Age than Johnny Ramone, and “Bone Jam” merges staccato, power-pop guitar and vocals with breezy Beach Boys back-up vocals. A few tracks — like the lysergic, aptly named “Pleasure Center” — find a genre cubby and curl up in it for the length of the song, and the brothers earn a thumbs up there as well. Gee, remember when rock was fun? Heavy Days takes us there.
